Course Description
This course will advance your expertise in
the area of surface design, by exploring a variety of processes and treatments.
You will be encouraged to be experimental in your approach with colour,
texture, and imagery to alter and embellish fabrics for apparel. Emphasis is on
the interrelationship of surface design with other art practices, encouraging
production of individual works with cultural relevance. Through a synthesis of
traditional techniques, contemporary variations, and cultural influences, you
will develop a diverse and self-expressive body of work.

Recap of Nov 20th meeting
During the session the renowned potter, Grayson Perry, who works with coils of clay (threads!) and numerous other media including weavings and etchings, spoke to us via the internet and iPlayer from the BBC, (a replay of the Reith Lecture) about the nature of art. He stimulated intellectual debate that covered numerous topics from the relevance of beauty in an art work, to the responsibility of the artist to give due credit to his fellow, technically adept, collaborators of which there are many more these days.
We also digressed gently to other topics of interest and I believe everyone went home with matters to ponder, but I hope that those driving practised restraint and only considered such matters when they were off the ice!
Thanks to all who took the trouble to come out for the evening. Everyone who has spoken to me since commented that the gathering encouraged and supported the discussion. It was a shame that Grayson couldn't actually make it to the meeting this time, but I think he would be very pleased to know that we consider that we were with him in Liverpool, UK - a hot bed of contemporary art and debate.
This morning Pamela came across this in today's Guardian. (If you have time, scroll through some of the comments as well. Artists and Non-Artists weigh in with some silly and some provocative thoughts as well.)

(Future) Felting Workshop in Calgary

I was fortunate enough to meet Judith during the first Canadian Felt:Feutre conference earlier this year and saw her glorious work exhibited at the show there and knew she would be a wonderful teacher for a Kreative Momentum Workshops.
I hope you will take advantage of her visiting us in Calgary.
Do get in touch if you have questions or want more information.
This is a great opportunity for beginner and advanced felters to learn more about Nuno felting, acid dyes, creating felted, sculptural clothing or other beautifully decorated surfaces. Also her method opens up the technique of felting to those with back and upper body aches - get in touch for more information, but I don't want to give the game away to everyone!

SDA CONFERENCE UPDATE

In October, SDA Board voted to postpone 2015 SDA Int'l conference slated for Tulsa, Oklahoma. While the Tulsa hosts were enthusiastic & incredibly welcoming, the board recognized a growing need to evaluate SDA's conference model. To that end, we are examining timing, costs & conference management. Our goal is to reinvent SDA conferences as an international event that will attract a broader audience - while also generating income that supports SDA's organization & mission.
We anticipate doing just that for 2017.

The Bellevue Arts Museum is showing the fabulous work of Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave. Her central project revolves around recreating exquisite, life-size historical costumes and fabrics entirely out of paper. See more on the website.
The exhibition starts November 21 and continues until Feb. 21.

Every so often I get information for immediate release to SDA members from the 'head office'.
This one is about the swatch collections which are now available online for everyone to experience… just follow the links….
You will remember we had one of the Swatch collections here for one of our meetings this year… and it was quite a different and better experience to handle it in person. I hope we can arrange to have another set of swatches next year.
However, if you can't make it to a meeting this is a great second best and those who have worked on putting it online deserve a lot of thanks… quite a job.
If you have a swatch you wish to add to the collection I will be bringing forms for submission to the next meeting. November 20th.

Grayson Perry is an artist, renowned potter and certainly a surface designer. His tapestries based on the Rake's Progress were shown in the Royal Academy this summer (They took my breath away and stimulated a good 2 hours worth of attention and more time on discussion.) Grayson has been selected to give this year's Reith Lectures on the BBC and we will be listening in to one of them at our next Surface Design Association meeting in Calgary.
You are welcome to bring or wear a piece of clothing that is "subtle with bright colours" in the style of…. Grayson.

The award-winning artist Grayson Perry asks whether it is really true that anything can be art. We live in an age when many contemporary artists follow the example of Marcel Duchamp, who famously declared that a urinal was a work of art. It sometimes seems that anything qualifies, from a pile of sweets on a gallery floor to an Oscar-winning actress asleep in a box. How does the ordinary art lover decide?
In a lecture delivered amidst the Victorian splendour of St. George's Hall in Liverpool, Perry analyses with characteristic wit the common tests - from commercial worth to public popularity to aesthetic value. He admits the inadequacies of such yardsticks, especially when applied to much conceptual and performance art. And he concludes that in his opinion, the quality most valued in the art world is seriousness.

Eligibility
The theme for the exhibition is “twisted” and work in all media is encouraged.
Artists are requested to submit no more than 5 items of their work.
Artwork must not have been displayed at the PMAC gallery within the last 12 months.
Submissions will be juried to ensure that works are non-derivative, demonstrate skillful execution of the media and are entirely the work of the applicant(s).

EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts is announcing a call for submissions of visual art open to all professional Calgary artists (please note that students are not eligible). EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts will select one local visual artist to create new work in the Ledge Gallery throughout the months of June and July, 2014. The artwork will then be exhibited for the month of August, 2014. An artist CARFAC exhibition fee as well as a total of $2000.00 in financial support to assist with material costs and subsistence will be provided.

The Leighton Art Centre's Christmas in the Country Art Sale signals the start to
the holidays, especially for people who love art and fine Alberta crafts. The annual

Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, November 8-11, in the Leighton Heritage Home
at the Centre. Admission is free for the sale and for all accompanying children's

This year the Leighton is taking one of Alberta's oldest and biggest art sales to
a whole new level:
100 Alberta artists each offer 15 unframed paintings in watercolour, acrylic, oil,
mixed media... and photography - including 30 new artists who have never shown at
the Leighton Art Centre.
50 Alberta artisans and sculptors showcasing crafts from ceramics, hand-blown glass

First "Slofemist" gathering at our 6th meeting
A very heartening turn out for October 17th meeting (our 6th!), and the first group to gather and work together on the "Slofemist" project under the auspices and guidance of Lois Klassen and Lori Weidenhammer.
Three particular patterns were available, with the invitation to interpret, or to create one's own response to Feminism and how it has affected one's own life.

Diane Krys
I'm very pleased to offer an invitation to my first solo show. I'm honored to be having it at the Alberta Craft Council's Discovery Gallery from Oct 26-Nov30, 2013. My journey with fiber started with rug hooking. It opened my eyes to the wider world of fiber and I soon went on to learn and explore many other techniques and mediums including knitting, crocheting, wet and dry felting. A few years ago these parallel explorations began to merge as I developed my own techniques to bring knitting, felting and rug hooking together in my work. I created a new language that allowed me to express myself in a completely new way. Flat planes of color and pattern have become sculptural expressions with new stories to share.
I would love to meet more of my fellow SDA members and other fiber enthusiasts. I welcome you to come and say hello at the artist's reception on Saturday Nov.2 from 2-4. I love travel and nature. Natural and handmade crafts are my favorites. I enjoy the process of handmaking from ceramics to fabrics & fibres. Some years ago I saw a seamless wool pouch in a Cambridge crafts market and wondering how it’s made. My curiosity brought me to source the roots of felt making. Found wool a marvelous medium and addicted to felt making since 2009. My passion drives me to pursue and explore the versatility of wool.
Wool felt is my favorite pastime and I’m very pleased to share with like-minded. Since 2009 I’ve offered almost 50 open and private workshops . I love fibre art and have recently explored eco dyeing and printing. My works are inspired by nature. I like to do eco prints with leaves – the environmental friendly art. It’s fun to share the beauty of felting and tutorials via my blog http://terriekwong.blogspot.com. Please check out Terriea's blog to see all the wonderful pictures of her work.
Natural print scarf:
Using natural resources to create unique scarf with leaves prints. Students are taught to make prints with shades of rose leaves and eucalyptus prints on silk scarves. And while the bundles are boiling we will make a wool felt flower brooch or bracelet.

COMMON THREADS
Thomas Roach and Sheila Wex gave a presentation last month at the Vancouver SDA show, about the Common Threads project. Some of you may be interested in following the progress of that project - check out http://common-threads-125.tumblr.com/ for lots of pics and information. We in the Lower Mainland will have a chance to see the completed masterpieces hanging in the Cathedral, in due course.

Theme and Context
Exhibition Theme: What’s on the Surface?
There is plenty of room for interpretation of the theme. An artist may choose to produce a meaningful surface that inspires, intrigues, or may simply be viewed as beautiful, ugly, or thought provoking. Perhaps you prefer to respond to the theme in a conceptual way. For example, one might explore the idea that what a person shows on the surface is not necessarily what the person feels inside. Or, one might express how cutting through the unappealing skin of the passion fruit reveals the beauty within. There are innumerable ways to address the theme and your approach is completely up to you.
This is a contemporary show open to the original application of traditional as well as experimental techniques.
For the purposes of this exhibition ‘the surface’ is to be a textile, fibre or thread-based work, where 'fibre' and ‘thread’ are used in their broadest possible sense, from the more traditional materials of cotton/silk/wool to the more innovative: strands of polymer plastics, wire, paper shreds, fibrous minerals, coils of clay etc.
Guidelines
- A maximum of 3 works may be submitted for consideration. A small series occupying a total of 30 cm or less in any direction will be considered as one piece.
- Works of art can be 2D or 3D and must be completed during the past two years.
- Art works as individual pieces, or as a small series occupying a total of 30 cm or less in any direction, can be accommodated easily. Larger pieces will be considered in the context of the available space.
- This is a curated show. All works should be of professional standard and finish.
- The curators, Linda Hawke and Karin Millson, have final say on inclusion.
- There is no submission fee.
- Submission Deadline: February 14, 2014
- -digital images of a maximum of 3 works proposed for exhibit; (max 3 images per piece, 300dpi sized to a maximum of 800 pixels per side). Image files should be named with a number and the last name of the artist, eg: 1_smith
- -a correspondingly numbered list of works including title, size (cm), media, year completed, value (or price, if for sale)
- -brief explanation of each work (50 word maximum)
- -artist’s bio, detailing your history as an artist and the philosophical approach to your work (200 word maximum)
- Transportation and insurance of works is entirely the responsibility of the artist.
- All works must be supplied ready to hang, clearly and securely labelled with artist’s name, title of work, directional arrow, and price on the back or bottom of the work.
- Any special installation instructions should be included with the work.
Timeline
Expression of Interest: November 10, 2013
Submission deadline: February 14, 2014
Artists will be notified by: March 14, 2014
Delivery of works: March 31, 2014
Finished artworks must be with the curator (Karin Millson, 4519 Coronation Drive, Calgary, Alberta, T2S1M5) by the end of the above date
Exhibition dates: April 5, 2014 – April 30, 2014
Opening reception: April 11, 2014
Pickup of unsold works: April 30, 2014
All works must be removed from the gallery by end April 30, 2014.
If you cannot be there yourself to remove your works, please arrange for another person to collect on that date.
It will be possible to sell works from the gallery. Atlantis Fine Framing and Studio will take a 25% commission on any works sold during the show. Sold works will remain on display for duration of the show.
