Opportunity for all:

Hi Artists,

An opportunity has come up for a retail space in Sunridge mall.  It’s on the upper level next to the Bay, 3,800 sq. ft. and would be available for  November 24 to December 7.   Based on the preliminary discussion with the relator it looks like I could fit in between 30 to 40 artist’s work in the store.  Also based on what the realtor said it would probably be $350. 00 a week per artist to participate.  Now, this looks like a prime location:  high end  foot traffic, pre-holiday time of the year and your art work in a place that is 11:00am to 7:00pm seven days a week.  When you consider that a one day show fee can range from $100.00 up to $285.00,  $350.00 for seven days is very reasonable (only $50.00 per day).  Participating artists can do one week or two (depends on the number of artists participating). 

So, I am sending out this notice to see what kind of interest there is with the artists I know.  As for the manning of the shop we would need a some volunteers who have a flexible schedule.  Since it’s only for two weeks I think it could be managed easily enough.

 Creative Stitches show in Calgary again, this time at Spruce Meadows. Shuttle bus service is scheduled from the Somerset CTrain station, if you don't want to drive out there. Not a lot of art at these things anymore, but a fair number of vendors where you can snap up supplies, whether fibre or mixed media related. (Sorry about missing the Edmonton dates for those of you further North!)

will teach you how to add more dimension and tactility to an already textural art, and to look at shape and line critically to implement design and mood.

 Loosely, but in the fibre related exploration:

/WOMANKIND is a peculiar portrait rooted in wabi-sabi: accepting fleetingness and imperfection. Skeletal lines, twisting and winding upwards, climb to sketch out an irregular human form. The tough skinned graceful silhouette portrays an honest image of femininity. Heating the raw steel rods, they transform into soft elegant fibres to be formed, painted, distressed, and finally, weathered in the sun. This woven and tangled figure is a question of permanence, an understanding of mortality, and an appreciation of flesh.
Lisa Hodgkinson
Lisa Hodgkinson is a Calgary sculptor working out of the back of an auto body shop in Forest Lawn. A graduate from the Alberta College of Art + Design, Lisa is inspired by minimalist sculpture, fibre craft, Japanese design and Bob Dylan.

FOR SALE:

I am interested in selling to  an artist (surface designer, yardage silk-screener, quilter, sewer?).  The table has a sturdy 4 x 8 foot plywood top which is padded with cotton quilt batting and then covered with a heavy cotton twill/satin surface cloth.  The table is bolted together and is easily disassembled and moved. The shelves underneath the top are removable. The table was designed for fabric silk screening and fabric painting.   The table is screwed together so it can be taken apart and moved.  There are 4 shelves under the table surface which can be removed.

The dimensions are 37” high by 4 x 8 feet.  There are wheels on the table legs which could be cut to make the table shorter if someone needed/wanted a shorter table.  I would like to get $300 for the table or will sell for the best offer.

   

    It is located in Coach Hill on the west side of Calgary.

My intent is to curate a con­tem­po­rary art exhibit that fea­tures new art­work inspired by orig­i­nal folklore/fairytales/stories. My spe­cific inter­est is with Cana­dian Folk­lore and Broth­ers Grimm Fairy Tales, but other artworks/stories would be accepted. I am look­ing for 10-15 Artists to par­tic­i­pate in a group exhibition.

FIBER FEVER
This exhibition highlights the use of fiber arts as media and process towards artistic expression. Dyeing, stitching, surface design, weaving, embroidery, quilting, batik, felting, basketry, textile manipulation, soft sculpture, and other mixed media artworks utilizing fibers as their primary material are just some of the many ways that artwork falls under the broad umbrella of “Fiber Arts”. Traditional and contemporary techniques and materials are welcome, as well as any themes the artist explores through fiber arts. Works may be two- or three-dimensional and must be original artworks conceived of and made by the artist. Pieces may be mixed-media, but must be primarily fiber; no photography or videos will be exhibited.   Downloadable PDF here. "Waste not, want not" was not just a catchy phrase for our predecessors.  When a family had little or no money, every scrap was used to cobble together the necessities of life.  The women of earlier generations showed great creativity and skill when creating quilts out of old dresses, suits and other bits and pieces around the house.  Their work was sometimes very utilitarian but their skill and talent often resulted in beautiful heirlooms.

Quilts from both the Royal Alberta Museum and our own collection highlight the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the creators in making attractive items to decorate their homes and keep their families warm.

The Musée Héritage Museum is pleased to be hosting "The Alberta Quilt Project" on Saturday, February 15.  Sign up to have your heritage quilt documented by staff of the Royal Alberta Museum and other quilt specialists as part of a permanent record of Alberta's quilting history. Come trade your ATCs on Saturday First-timers, long-timers, young-timers and old-timers - come one, come all! There will be lots of new cards to see and trade. That's a guarantee! Besides trading your art, you can share techniques, themes, ideas and experiences. It's especially good to see impromptu projects worked on separately or collaboratively within the group. Have you any ideas for group work? Any themes you'd like to see explored by other hands? Please bring spare card-making supplies to share with other traders. Diane Krys

I'm very pleased to offer an invitation to my first solo show. I'm  honored to be having it at the Alberta Craft Council's Discovery Gallery from Oct 26-Nov30, 2013.   My journey with fiber started with rug hooking. It opened my eyes to the wider world of fiber and I soon went on to learn and explore many other techniques and mediums including knitting, crocheting, wet and dry felting.  A few years ago these parallel explorations began to merge as I developed my own techniques to bring knitting, felting and rug hooking together  in my work.  I created a new language  that allowed me to express myself  in a completely new way.  Flat planes of color and pattern have become sculptural expressions with new stories to share.

 I would love to meet more of my fellow SDA members and other fiber enthusiasts. I welcome you to come and say hello at the artist's reception on Saturday Nov.2 from 2-4. Please feel free to get in touch any other time as well.  It doesn't take much to lure me out to talk about art and fiber! (Diane Krys)

On a side note, Diane Duncan's group show at the Canyon Meadows Community Hall was attended by almost 500 people! A well rounded and diverse show, you can see some of it here. I was amazed at the variety of work!

 Terriea Kwong - international felting artist coming to Langley. Get excited...please help me give a big welcome to Terriea Kwong! She is coming to North America to teach many felt making classes! Starting November 25, Terriea Kwong will be sharing her expertise with us in making a 3D felt clutch purses, or a 3D vessels and/or Eco print scarves. 

    Below is a sneak peak at Terriea's background!

        I love travel and nature.   Natural and handmade crafts are my favorites.  I enjoy the process of handmaking from ceramics to fabrics & fibres.    Some years ago I saw a seamless  wool pouch in a  Cambridge crafts market and wondering how it’s made.  My curiosity brought me to source the roots of felt making. Found wool a marvelous medium and addicted to felt making since 2009.  My passion drives me to pursue  and explore the versatility of wool.

Wool felt is my favorite pastime and I’m very pleased to share with like-minded.   Since 2009 I’ve offered  almost 50 open and private workshops .  I love fibre art and have recently explored eco dyeing and printing.  My works  are  inspired by nature.  I like to do eco prints with leaves – the environmental friendly art.   It’s fun to share the beauty of felting and tutorials  via my blog http://terriekwong.blogspot.com. Natural print scarf:
    Using natural resources to create unique scarf with leaves prints. Students are taught to make prints with shades of rose leaves and eucalyptus prints on silk scarves. And while the bundles are boiling we will make a wool felt flower brooch or bracelet.

The Arts for All Program is open to individuals, collectives and organizations and will fund art projects that will increase artistic activities and opportunities within the Greater Forest Lawn community. Preference will be given to applicants who are located in Greater Forest Lawn, although applicants from outside the community will also be considered if their projects value participation from local artists and community members as well as the participation of artists, organizations and community members from diverse backgrounds. "I have been creating paper mache sculptures since the 1980’s. About 7 years ago I became interested in books as ready made sculptural objects that I would alter. My love of embellishing my artworks give each book its unique persona as I develop its pages and cover. I am never in a rush to finish the book I am working on. For inspiration I look for the unusual ."

EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts is announcing a call for submissions of visual art open to all professional Calgary artists (please note that students are not eligible). EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts will select one local visual artist to create new work in the Ledge Gallery throughout the months of June and July, 2014. The artwork will then be exhibited for the month of August, 2014. Boundaries, borders and edges... To what extent is a country defined by its perimeter...by the choices and placement of edges? Whether political, historical, psychological and/or geographical, our comprehension and expression of these points of delineation represent integral parts of who we are, both as individuals and collectively. Be it selvedge to selvedge, raw edge or treated, our textiles have unavoidable beginnings and endings. How these are handled can be as varied as the makers themselves. The SDA welcomes your rich interpretation of this concept in presenting a diverse Canadian perspective on our boundaries.

Opportunities are being explored to mount this exhibition in a number of venues - at the SDA Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, June 2015, at the Newfoundland & Labrador Fibre Arts Conference in Gros Morne National Park, October 2015, and elsewhere. A Call for Entry will be sent out by email in 2014 when a venue has been confirmed.

    All Canadian members of the Surface Design Association are invited to participate. Artists must be current members of the Surface Design Association as of January 2015, and resident in Canada.
    All work is to be created within the boundaries of a two-dimensional 16x28 inch rectangle format, to be hung vertically. Specific hanging guidelines are available.
    The work should best represent your current practice, be it experimental or signature style, and speak to the theme expressed above.

 American Tapestry Alliance (ATA) UNTITLED/UNJURIED exhibition
Deadline for Submissions: January 31, 2014

This call is open to all artists working with hand woven tapestry. ATA invites entries not only from artists who work within more traditional definitions of tapestry, but also those artists who work expands upon the core principles of the medium as it explores new techniques and processes.  Multi-media work is welcome as long as the primary technique is tapestry.  The size of the tapestry may not exceed 10" by 10" by 1" deep.  Artists may submit only one piece.  Group challenges and mentoring pairs are encouraged.  Work must be original, executed by the entrant, of recent completion and not shown in a prior ATA show.  UNTITLED will hang at URI Feinstein Providence Campus Gallery, July 1 - August 23, 2014.

Celebrating Craft in Newfoundland and Labrador and Craft Year 2015, Fibre Arts Newfoundland and Labrador will take place from October 15 - 18, 2015 in beautiful Gros Morne National Park.

The Instructor Committee is now calling for proposals from interested designers, makers, and teachers.  We invite you to be creative, and develop sessions that will inspire our Conference participants to reach beyond the boundaries of their current studio practices, and think in new ways, explore new ideas and develop new products.  The Committee welcomes innovation in techniques and materials.

10000 Hours: Craft Invested
The CCF/FCMA and the Craft Council of British Columbia (CCBC) invite you to Vancouver for the 10,000 Hours: Craft Invested Conference. From October 17th to the 20th, 2013, the CCBC will present a wide variety of lectures, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions and a gala fundraiser supporting the work of the CCBC during their 40th Anniversary year.

Conference discussions will be lively, touching on topics such as 'Craft - Origin, Place and Influence', 'Craft and Cultural Migration', 'The Function of Function', 'Craft: A Scary Word', and, closing out the conference, the CCF/FCMA's own National Symposium titled 'Connection & Collection', featuring Dr, Sandra Alfoldy (NSCAD University), Victoria Henry (Canada Art Bank), Jonathon Bancroft-Snell (Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery) and Denis Longchamps (Craft Journal and the Burlington Arts Center). 
With over fifty speakers in total, it will be a whirlwind of debate!
Each panel is $20 per person, or a two day pass can be purchased for $130 (for CCBC Members) or $145 (for non-members). The CCF/FCMA National Symposium is not included in the two day pass, but is a separate $20 ticket for the event, which runs 6-9pm on Saturday, October 19th.

"Creative Stitches" show tickets now available

This may not be everyone's cup of tea/coffee/wine/lager, but the vendors alone are usually worth the trip. Most of the vendors too are either Canadian or Canadian affiliate companies with great specials on threads and fabrics, should your desire run to commercial products. I do hope that Copperfield Books will be there as that's where i drool and shop the most!

As usual, the show will be in Edmonton first, and then in Calgary.

Fully half of the show is "scrapbooking" related, but even there, one can find interesting doodads and fibres to incorporate into work or inspire new explorations.

Tickets can be pre-ordered here for Calgary and here for Edmonton, and are savable as a PDF on your desktop for printing as the show nears.

Visit Diana Patterson’s book collection of mainly late 18th century books. She has made particular collections of the novel Tristram Shandy, which contain a hand-made marbled leaf in it, and also of books bound in decorated “wastepaper”, usually marbled wastepaper, but sometimes paste paper. The “wastepaper” is usually printer's waste.  In addition, Laurie Shelton from Burlington, Vermont will join us.  Laurie is a specialist in papermaking used in early childhood education.

Wendy Passmore, puppeteer, and director of W.P. Puppet Theatre Society will talk with us about WPTS' s new puppet show “Finding My Song: By Bird” which features paper as the main medium for the puppets and set. Wendy will talk about the specific challenges of a touring show made of paper and the design process for the unique puppets. Wendy will also address the additional feature of the show which is the projected video of animated paper collages. We will have a sneak peak behind the scenes of this new show, with a possibility to see it live sometime during the spring of 2012.  We may also make some puppets….
