You are Invited to the public reception for TMC's Exhibit...
Flood Stories: creative flotsam on the edge of high water
 - at The New Gallery +15 Window, Epcor Centre, 205 – 8 Ave SE
 - Thursday May 15, 6 pm

Take a look inside the process of creating a limited edition hand-printed book that honours images and words from many contributors.

Stories and texts were collected from various sources including the homeless community.
The images include original relief prints made by youth at Inn from the Cold and screened photographs by flood evacuee Max Ciesielski.

Printmaker and TMC artist-mentor Eveline Kolijn leads this project that captures the rawness and diversity of emotions evoked by the 2013 flood.

The exhibit continues to May 31.

Help the children at River Valley school bring back the heart to their school post Calgary summer floods

I wonder how you all are getting on this summer.  I hope it has been a good one for you.  Unfortunately it hasn't been kind to everyone.  There are many children whose homes and schools have been badly affected by the flooding in Alberta this summer and recovery is still going on.

The elementary school I work with (doing fibre art) was completely flooded at basement and some of ground floor levels. The school is River Valley School in NW Calgary, which provides some wonderful children with Montessori and Standard stream education from Kindergarten to Grade 6. These children have lost much of the heart of their school but the staff and board are determined to bring back the buzz to the school. Damage was horrific with the loss of materials for the Montessori and other classrooms that were in the basement, and damage to upper level classrooms.

I have been asked, and am very happy to help with some fundraising in September. The students will be working with me making felted panels in September that will be up for sale at a fundraising event to benefit their school, later in September.

My request to you is this...
If you can donate any amounts of roving or carded wool or even bits of shear fabrics and other fibres that the students can incorporate into their felt works please let me know so that I can collect it from you, or send it urgently to me (Karin Millson).  Any donation is welcome to reach me by end August for the classes in early September, just a few threads and fibres popped into an envelope will help this great cause.

Your help will be truly appreciated by  the teachers, the school and I - but mostly the children.
And I know that fibre folks rally round when the going gets tough...

Change of Venue for "Art of the Book"

This affects the exhibition only, not the conference.

 We regretfully announce that due to the impact of recent flooding on the
downtown core of Calgary, CBBAG has been advised that the Museum of
Contemporary Art has cancelled programming and will not re-open unti September. 
The planned opening and show of Art of the Book 2013 will not take place at MOCA.

 CBBAG has confirmed the location for the Art of the Book 2013 Exhibition.
 It will be at:

 Endeavor Art Gallery and Event Space
 1209 1 St SW, Calgary

 Opening will be as planned Friday July 12, 6:30 - 9:30, and the show will
run until July 25th.

 CBBAG wishes to thank DaDe Gallery for agreeing to host the show in our hour
 of need; Endeavor is a larger space, so we will not have to cut the size of
 the show to fit.

 Thanks to all who have made such an effort with the locations scouting and
 changes. Hope to see you at Endeavor or at the University (events open to
 the public are listed on the attached poster).

 If you can help spread the word we'd appreciate it. Our new poster is
 attached.

Rebuilding

Calgary Arts Development: Calgary Arts Flood Rebuild fund launched

The Alberta Craft Council has been contacted by members wanting to know how they can help. We have been working with the Calgary Arts Development and encourage monetary donations to their Food Rebuild fund.

In the week since the flood there has been an outpouring of support and offers to donate to the arts in Alberta. Calgary Arts Development has launched the Calgary Arts Flood Rebuild project on InvestYYC.com with an aim of directing these offers to the arts community.

The Calgary Arts Flood Rebuild funds will support artists and arts organizations from across southern Alberta as they recover from the devastating impacts of the flood. The funds will be administered by Calgary Arts Development, in conjunction with other community and government partners from across Alberta whose focus is on direct support of the arts.

Suncor Energy Foundation has donated $50,000 to this campaign and will match $50,000 in individual donations!

Call for Submissions: The Alberta Flood Rose Project, Calgary  

Deadline: July 26

The Alberta Flood Rose Project invites all Calgary and area visual artists to create and donate an original 4"x4" (inch) piece of wall art, depicting the provincial flower of Alberta, the wild rose. The finished pieces (due on or before July 26, 2013) will be arranged in groups of 100, and framed as a larger collection piece.

After being on display in a public location (to be determined) during the month of August, the larger framed art collection pieces will be up for auction at the end of August, 2013 with all proceeds to go to flood relief (Red Cross).

This will be a unique opportunity for individuals or corporations to own a piece of Alberta history-in-the-making, with 100% of the proceeds going to flood relief. These will be one-of-a-kind collaboration pieces by emerging and professional visual artists.

Call for Entry: 1st Saskatchewan Wearable Art Gala

Deadline: August 23

Artists are invited to submit works of wearable art for jurying - cash prizes will be awarded at a Gala Fashion show in Saskatoon, Canada on October 26, 2013. Here is an opportunity to unbridled your imagination and to explore materials and process not normally used in the construction of clothing. 

This Wearable Art Gala is NOT about fashion not clothing, it is all about creating a new approach to what is worn on the body. There are three categories: Open, Corset/Codpiece, Headpiece, the only requirement: all submissions must be wearable. More details here.

Short film for PechaKucha style evening at Puppet Power Conference, Calgary

Wendy Passmore-Godfrey, Karin Millson and Daniel Millson collaborated to produce a 7 minute film for the PechaKucha style evening at Puppet Power Conference, Calgary 2013. The monotonic audio creates an almost  hypnotic state, as one hears the biological diagnoses of marine creatures, though one attempts to stay connected with their visual beauty through the visuals.  This is preceded by a short poem indicating the reason the film came into being through the "Fearless Use of Puppetry".

I have heard back from a few who have "survived" the waters, and am glad to say  all of us have regained our senses of humour, as soggy as they may be.

I will be posting news of member upcoming shows as soon as i replant my garden, taken with us in our move *during* the flood!

I do hope that all are safe and as dry as can be expected now that the waters are receding in Calgary. Without monopolizing this entry, let me just say that after what i personally have been through, i will never look at a river the same way again. (Still love 'em, but sure as heck respect 'em a lot more now..)

Calgary Arts Development

Calgary Arts Development is assuming the role of an arts responder hub; playing three key roles of coordinator, information source and guide as well as relief provision. They will be providing an assessment of the flood's impact of Calgary's arts sector to all orders of government and key partners by Friday, June 28, and they require your assistance in gathering this information. If you are an artist or an arts organization that has sustained damage or lost revenue due to the floods, please fill out this form.

If you or your organization face an immediate crisis or need for assistance, they will do their best to assist through their networks. Please let them know if you face an immediate need through this form.

King Edward School, CalgaryKing Edward School: cSpace Projects is temporarily opening the vacant King Edward School for arts/community organizations and artists who have lost use of their studio and workspaces due to flooding this week. The school is located at 1720 - 30th Ave SW in the Marda Loop area.  Temporary storage and/or operating space can be accommodated in our 800 sq.ft. classrooms in the heritage building and larger spaces can be mobilized if necessary. The site has power, plenty of parking, lockable spaces and working washrooms. Studio/workspaces uses can be for a few weeks. Storage can be longer. Contact Deeter.Schurig@cspaceprojects.com
