    Saturday, October 5th, we are opening Elin Noble’s exhibiton – “Vox Stellarum” – silk itajime panels.   Opening Reception – 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. – all are welcome!

Unfortunately, due to ill health, Elin will be unable to join us at the opening reception – so we will need to send her our best wishes and lots of pictures of the opening to provide her with the energy for a speedy recovery. With regret, we report the cancellation of the workshops, “Folds” and “Alternative Marbling” with Elin Noble.  As noted above in the Exhibition section, due to ill health, Elin is unable to travel and teach at this time.  We will stay in contact and reschedule when Elin is able to return to the Sunshine Coast.

Expression of Interest for Surface Design Association exhibition Edge of the Forest: Exploring Perimeters

Deadline: November 1, 2013

Boundaries, borders and edges... To what extent is a country defined by its perimeter...by the choices and placement of edges? Whether political, historical, psychological and/or geographical, our comprehension and expression of these points of delineation represent integral parts of who we are, both as individuals and collectively. Be it selvedge to selvedge, raw edge or treated, our textiles have unavoidable beginnings and endings. How these are handled can be as varied as the makers themselves. The SDA welcomes your rich interpretation of this concept in presenting a diverse Canadian perspective on our boundaries.

Opportunities are being explored to mount this exhibition in a number of venues - at the SDA Conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma, June 2015, at the Newfoundland & Labrador Fibre Arts Conference in Gros Morne National Park, October 2015, and elsewhere. A Call for Entry will be sent out by email in 2014 when a venue has been confirmed.

• All Canadian members of the Surface Design Association are invited to participate. Artists must be current members of the Surface Design Association as of January 2015, and resident in Canada.
• All work is to be created within the boundaries of a two-dimensional 16x28 inch rectangle format, to be hung vertically. Specific hanging guidelines are available.
• The work should best represent your current practice, be it experimental or signature style, and speak to the theme expressed above.

 Call for Submissions American Tapestry Alliance (ATA) UNTITLED/UNJURIED exhibition

Deadline for Submissions: January 31, 2014

This call is open to all artists working with hand woven tapestry. ATA invites entries not only from artists who work within more traditional definitions of tapestry, but also those artists who work expands upon the core principles of the medium as it explores new techniques and processes.  Multi-media work is welcome as long as the primary technique is tapestry.  The size of the tapestry may not exceed 10" by 10" by 1" deep.  Artists may submit only one piece.  Group challenges and mentoring pairs are encouraged.  Work must be original, executed by the entrant, of recent completion and not shown in a prior ATA show.  UNTITLED will hang at URI Feinstein Providence Campus Gallery, July 1 - August 23, 2014.

Celebrating Craft in Newfoundland and Labrador and Craft Year 2015, Fibre Arts Newfoundland and Labrador will take place from October 15 - 18, 2015 in beautiful Gros Morne National Park.

The Instructor Committee is now calling for proposals from interested designers, makers, and teachers.  We invite you to be creative, and develop sessions that will inspire our Conference participants to reach beyond the boundaries of their current studio practices, and think in new ways, explore new ideas and develop new products.  The Committee welcomes innovation in techniques and materials.

  Kaffe Fassett lecture
Out of Hand and Pudding Yarns are excited to present a lecture with Kaffe Fassett. This lecture is designed to inspire and motivate. The presentation highlights works from his latest projects, these include his patchwork quilts, fabrics, needlepoint, mosaic, painting and knitting designs. A tremendous amount of Kaffe’s inspiration comes from his continual travels and his lecture is designed not so much to instruct but to empower and inspire the audience to create and develop their “mind’s eye”. Audiences leave invigorated - entranced by Kaffe’s sense and use of colour, they are ready to try it themselves and are encouraged to do so. The slide show lasts approximately 45 minutes followed by a question and answer session and book signing. Lecture will be held at Christ Church Calgary located in Elbow Park at 3602 8th Street S.W. Monday October 7 7:00pm Fee:$35.00

KUDOS:

 Congratulations to Michelle Sirois-Silver, whose new work Recovery Method 2, has been juried into the 2015 Fiber International at Sebastopol Center for the Arts in Sebastopol, CA. 

Innovations in Fiber Art VI is a juried exhibition presenting thought-provoking, unconventional and innovative fiber works in a range of materials--metals, mesh, paper, wood, natural or manmade fibers--applied to fiber techniques, Accepting two- or three-dimensional pieces including wearable art and installations.

See attached image of Michelle's work, and following is some information she sent about it. 

Recovery Method is a new series of hand hooked works inspired by waste materials created by Vancouver designer, Katherine Soucie’s clothing line titled, “Sans Soucie”.  Katherine uses hosiery seconds that she purchases from manufacturers.  She hand dyes and prints on the surface and then stitches the pieces together to create clothing.  Her process creates colourful waste that I then repurpose into my Recovery Method series.  I have always hand dyed my own textiles, so working with Katherine’s already dyed hosiery has been a new and surprisingly liberating experience that has both simplified and inspired my process.   Working in this manner challenges me as an artist to understand that I can still create signature work when working with sans soucie recycled waste hosiery and I love the continuity of repurposing it into yet another art form. Michelle

I love this emagazine and it's free. Artizen. Simply sign up for the emailed version and peruse at your own convenience. Each issue is themed monthly and covers a wide variety of professional artists in many media.  There is Art Trader too (also free), which may be closing soon, but back issues are still online.

Karen King of Aubusson House is having a giant yarn sale!! Think outside the box if you're not a "needle worker". Yarns can be building blocks for so many techniques and projects.

And a recent "discovery" by Karin Millson in her own words:

  A wonderful art-materials-for -free location. One can go over to The Calgary Herald building, 215 - 16th Street S.E. , Calgary, Alberta T2E 7P5 and park in the bay (not blocking the gate of course) close to the signage for "Shipping and Receiving", and follow the clear signage to Roll Ends. My advice is to take with you a donation (they don't give change, I gave $5,) and the nice lady will accept your money and take you to a stack of end of rolls.She suggested I pick up 4 rolls for my donation (I only needed 2).

These are useful for rough design, paper patters, wrapping your works for shipping etc etc...

Easy and painless... One need never buy this sort of paper again from art material shops.

Workshop on Saltspring Island  May 12, 13 and 14, 2013   We are thrilled to announce that Lauri Swim will be on Salt Spring Island

    From Start to Finish- A Three Day Workshop with Laurie Swim       
    Explore possibilities for creating landscapes in fabric and thread from an artist's perspective in this three-day workshop with Laurie Swim. Participants shall develop a series of samples with innovative techniques and processes. Laurie will teach you a unique method for creating a small building that can be incorporated into a small landscape using the techniques learned.  Plus, over the three day period, each student will develop a pattern for a future landscape project of their own choosing. Demonstrations will be given throughout the workshop as well as suggestions for mounting, framing and hanging a finished work. $355.00 for 3 days

    About the artist: Laurie has worked as an artist for some 40 years, developing unique and innovative treatments to fashion her imagery in textiles with fabric and thread. She has written three books, two published internationally, on quilt art. The Joy of Quilting with an Introduction by Alex Colville, 1984, made her an early leader in the art quilt field. Laurie's third book, Rags to Riches: The Quilt as Art with an introduction by Mary Pratt, was published in Canada in 2007.
  
Laurie's works grace many private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Art Bank, Nova Scotia Designer Craft Council, the City of Toronto Art Collection and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. Del Mano Gallery in Los Angeles, California has represented Laurie since 2007. She is also represented by Zwicker's Art Gallery in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Amicus Gallery in Chester, NS.

BC member Jaiya Anka Ross, has recently made the transition to working more as a designer/maker and has become a boutique owner, in beautiful Victoria, BC. Following is her info:

    As of this April, I will become the new owner of a lovely boutique called "Cusp" and it has been on Lower Johnson (in the heart of boutique row!) for five years, cultivating a following among fashion-forward women. I will be evolving the collections within the heritage space, to include a greater focus on local designers, products and practices with a greater emphasis on sustainability, and my own work over time. The boutique will focus on wearables for women and textile products for the home.

    And so I am looking for local designers and artists who may wish to have their work featured in a boutique in downtown Victoria. The boutique is fashion-forward and currently features products in a mid-price point category. With time, I would like to bring in "exhibits" of the work of local artisans and host artist/designer talks, in order to increase the awareness, education and appreciation around textile art and design.

    Here is the info about my class coming up this summer. Environmental Installation, June 8, 15, 22. 3 consecutive Saturdays. register with ECU. Cost $245.

    Working with natural materials, found objects and local environments can be a great source of inspiration. In this course you will learn basic techniques such as plaiting and weaving along with ecological techniques for assembling and fastening organic materials. Attention will be given to building a stable armature onto which branches, leaves or recycled materials can be fastened. You will explore the concept of responding to specific sites through projects that float on water, hang in trees or are situated on the soil. Further reading material on the history of environmental art, featuring the artwork of international and local artists, will also be supplied. Dress appropriately for both indoor and outdoor activities.



Artistry of Rug Hooking (with Rachelle LeBlanc) at the Leighton Centre
April 13th, 2013

This is a one day introductory rug hooking class where you will learn the necessary techniques to create or improve your own rug hooking project. The classes run for one day from 10:00am to 4:00pm. The cost of the class includes step by step instruction book, the kit called "View from the Leighton"(designed exclusively for this workshop with an image of an Alberta Foothills), hook, pattern on linen, and wool to complete the project.

In this workshop, students will be shown new ways to use rug hooking as a creative tool for self expression. Students will learn how to create movement using the techniques of transitional and directional hooking of color.  Nothing in nature is straight or even in width; the same rule applies to rug hooking.  Treat the wool strips the same way you would use a paint brush.  Some areas of color will be wider then others and nothing should be straight.  Use narrower strips towards the horizon and the wider strips towards the foreground by trimming the strips as needed.  The wool strips included in the kit have been cut with #8 and #6 blades.
Students need to bring a 12" to 14" hoop and a pair of fabric scissors.

Imagine your own images on fabric! Print your own designs on yardage, clothing, or accessories using dyes, pigments, and hand-cut stencils. You will be supplied with a silkscreen to use in class to create unique textiles for artworks or functional

1st Saskatchewan Wearable Art Gala

Artists are invited to submit works of wearable art for jurying - cash prizes will be awarded at a Gala Fashion Show in Saskatoon, Canada on October 26, 2013. This Wearable Art Show and Gala promises to be an evening unlike any other.

This event is in support of the proposed Jack Millikin Centre, a vibrant, four-season building nestled in the boreal forest of Saskatchewan: the future home to a variety of cultural and ecological events, with a focus on community, celebration and education (including the "Emma International Collaboration").Click here for more details.

ART QUILTS LOWELL 2013 is a juried
exhibition, organized by the Brush Art Gallery, to identify and encourage quilt
artists from throughout the United States and Canada. A venue of the annual
Lowell Quilt Festival (August 8, 9 and 10), the exhibition will provide an
overview of some of the finest quilts being produced.

 Exhibits:

  "Meet the Best of the West"  (SAQA--Studio Art Quilt Associates), Galleria (Inglewood) 907 9th Ave S.E. Calgary  Feb 2 to March 23/13. This exhibit is travelling to various venues from B.C. to SK between now and June 1, 2014. This is the only Calgary venue booked so far. Enjoy 36 pieces from SAQA Western Canada members located from B.C. to Manitoba.

O Canada 2013

International Quilt Festival Chicago, June 20-23, 2013 plans to showcase Canadian quilts and their makers in a special juried exhibit, O Canada. This exhibit is open to quilters currently residing in Canada. You must reside in a Canadian province to be eligible for this exhibit.

We would like to invite you to participate in this exciting exhibit focusing on the Canadian quilter. You may submit a total of two quilts for our consideration. Quilts need not be made specifically for this exhibit. Traditional or art, all quilts made by residents of Canada will be considered.  LINK.




The Harris-Warke Gallery (Red Deer, Alberta) invites all artists to submit proposals to show work in their exhibition space for 2014. The Harris-Warke Gallery encourages exposure to a wide variety of Arts, including textiles. LINK.

 Artists are invited to create two-dimensional artworks of any archival media in the themes of biodiversity and/or invasive species. Images may be representational, non-representational, abstract, or conceptual. The artworks will be selected on a basis of high technical quality, aesthetic achievement, marketing and promotional value, and diversity in style/subject matter. Selection will be made by a committee of artists, curators and scientists. The purchased artwork becomes part of the permanent collection owned by the ISC. LINK.
