Canada has a new anti spam law that requires businesses and organizations to now have permission from anyone who receives their emails, whether they are newsletters or bits pointing something out that may be of interest to members.

Though we (SDA) are classified as a "non profit" organization, we still have to have express permission from members for us to continue sending these emails. The blog posts coming to your inbox may not be covered under this law, as the answers and regulations on the official government site do not address this issue, BUT as a safety measure, all members will be emailed in the next few weeks, asking for express permission.

When you receive the email asking for your permission, you MUST answer with either "subscribe" or "unsubscribe"--implied consent is not acceptable anymore. If you do not, you will be removed from the list, regardless of you wanting or not to have these sent to you.

Please spread the word as well, as some members neither respond to emails sent, nor are correctly listed in the SDA database (outdated email addresses). You can send me an email with the appropriate response also to arlee dot ar at gmail dot com. Please put "Subscribe to SDA (Alberta)" or "Unsubscribe from SDA(Alberta)" in the subject header and your full name in the body of the email. I will then apprise the pertinent "officers" and representatives of this acknowledgement. This permission will cover blog posts arriving in your email box, and the occasional information we may send out that is not on the blog.

This is also a good time for you all to make sure that your email address IS current and correct. Bounced member emails will also be removed, which may mean you get no communications from us at all, even if you want them.

SDA CONFERENCE UPDATE

 In October, SDA Board voted to postpone 2015 SDA Int'l conference slated for Tulsa, Oklahoma. While the Tulsa hosts were enthusiastic & incredibly welcoming, the board recognized a growing need to evaluate SDA's conference model. To that end, we are examining timing, costs & conference management. Our goal is to reinvent SDA conferences as an international event that will attract a broader audience - while also generating income that supports SDA's organization & mission.

 We anticipate doing just that for 2017.

WHAT'S THE MEANING OF MAKING?

 SDA Members Dr. Kim Hahn (Kent State) & Dr. Ann Collier (N. Arizona U.) invite you to participate in a survey about the meaning of handcrafts & textiles in your life.They're looking for women over 18 to participate in a short online survey to explore the role of textiles (like sewing, knitting, weaving, felting, lace-making) & handcrafts - with special interest in how making is related to environmental behavior, personality, well-being & possibly perception of body image in relationship to social media use as well as fashion behavior and leisure activities.

 The Bellevue Arts Museum is showing the fabulous work of Belgian artist Isabelle de Borchgrave.  Her central project revolves around recreating exquisite, life-size historical costumes and fabrics entirely out of paper. See more on the website.

Diane Krys

I'm very pleased to offer an invitation to my first solo show. I'm  honored to be having it at the Alberta Craft Council's Discovery Gallery from Oct 26-Nov30, 2013.   My journey with fiber started with rug hooking. It opened my eyes to the wider world of fiber and I soon went on to learn and explore many other techniques and mediums including knitting, crocheting, wet and dry felting.  A few years ago these parallel explorations began to merge as I developed my own techniques to bring knitting, felting and rug hooking together  in my work.  I created a new language  that allowed me to express myself  in a completely new way.  Flat planes of color and pattern have become sculptural expressions with new stories to share.

 I would love to meet more of my fellow SDA members and other fiber enthusiasts. I welcome you to come and say hello at the artist's reception on Saturday Nov.2 from 2-4. Please feel free to get in touch any other time as well.  It doesn't take much to lure me out to talk about art and fiber! (Diane Krys)

On a side note, Diane Duncan's group show at the Canyon Meadows Community Hall was attended by almost 500 people! A well rounded and diverse show, you can see some of it here. I was amazed at the variety of work!


WORKSHOPS:

 Terriea Kwong - international felting artist coming to Langley. Get excited...please help me give a big welcome to Terriea Kwong! She is coming to North America to teach many felt making classes! Starting November 25, Terriea Kwong will be sharing her expertise with us in making a 3D felt clutch purses, or a 3D vessels and/or Eco print scarves. 

    Below is a sneak peak at Terriea's background!

        I love travel and nature.   Natural and handmade crafts are my favorites.  I enjoy the process of handmaking from ceramics to fabrics & fibres.    Some years ago I saw a seamless  wool pouch in a  Cambridge crafts market and wondering how it’s made.  My curiosity brought me to source the roots of felt making. Found wool a marvelous medium and addicted to felt making since 2009.  My passion drives me to pursue  and explore the versatility of wool.

Wool felt is my favorite pastime and I’m very pleased to share with like-minded.   Since 2009 I’ve offered  almost 50 open and private workshops .  I love fibre art and have recently explored eco dyeing and printing.  My works  are  inspired by nature.  I like to do eco prints with leaves – the environmental friendly art.   It’s fun to share the beauty of felting and tutorials  via my blog http://terriekwong.blogspot.com. Natural print scarf:
    Using natural resources to create unique scarf with leaves prints. Students are taught to make prints with shades of rose leaves and eucalyptus prints on silk scarves. And while the bundles are boiling we will make a wool felt flower brooch or bracelet.

The Arts for All Program is open to individuals, collectives and organizations and will fund art projects that will increase artistic activities and opportunities within the Greater Forest Lawn community. Preference will be given to applicants who are located in Greater Forest Lawn, although applicants from outside the community will also be considered if their projects value participation from local artists and community members as well as the participation of artists, organizations and community members from diverse backgrounds. Applicants are encouraged to connect with International Avenue BRZ early in their project planning to get acquainted with the community and learn about opportunities available, such as artBOX on 17E.

shipping window for member 12x12 show clarification

As some of you may have noticed, on the pdf guidelines for the member show, it states that Work must be shipped to arrive no earlier than May 13, 2013 and not later than May 17, 2013 in order to be included in the exhibition.

I have contacted the show organizer, asking how such a narrow window could guarantee that anyone sending internationally--and that includes Canada--- could possibly ensure even with tracking and special post, that the package get there not before and not after, risking rejection and a rather pricey tour with no guaranteed end game.

I am glad to report that our entries can be mailed the week before the "beginning date" and as long as they get there before the end date of May 17th, they WILL be accepted and stored until the show is mounted.

IF you have already entered online, you will hopefully have received a missive stating this:

Although the shipping instructions specify that work must arrive at the gallery between May 13 and May 17, we have made special arrangements for you because you are shipping internationally. We know that it’s difficult to predict how long the work might be in transit. The gallery has agreed to accept and store your work if it arrives early.

And by the way, given the nature of this show, I’m not prepared to reject a piece that arrives a couple of days late, especially if there’s bad weather.

I just wanted this clarified for those who have read the pdf guidelines and cringed at the thought that their work may not get there on time. Now that we have these facts, please do use the CaFe entry system to log in your pieces, with all the info required, and get set to mail!

Surface Design Association Invites Fashion Design Submissions for

San Antonio Runway Show

             Surface Design Association (SDA) invites apparel and fashion designers to submit their outrageous, innovative, one-of-a-kind wearables to in•ter•face: Fabricate, the juried Members Fashion Show to be staged during the upcoming biennial 2013 International Surface Design Association Conference in San Antonio, Texas, from June 6-9, 2013. 

From the sublime to the hilariously droll, SDA’s biennial fashion show always entertains. Stunning hand printed fabrics, unexpected textile manipulations and opulent surface embellishments – on both classic and surprising silhouettes – adorn the runway in motion. This year’s show, Fabricate, will unfurl in the Sky Room atop the University of the Incarnate Word campus on June 8, 2013. This student-produced event will be conceived and executed by UIW Fashion Management majors as part of a summer course on fashion show production led by Dr. Melinda Adams.

            Carolyn Benesh, Co-editor of Ornament Magazine – the internationally renowned resource on personal adornment – has agreed to be among the show judges. Benesh has spent the past 30 years exploring and documenting how what we wear can be a beautiful and meaningful expression of creative energy.

SDA Fabricate’s Special Guest Artist Judy Bales creates sculpture for the body by transforming society’s detritus and discards into floating ephemeral fantasies.  Benesh, Bales, Adams and Leesa Hubbell, SDA’s Editor of Digital Publications (and NYC fashion industry veteran), will serve as jurors for the show.  Awards will be determined from examination of actual garments. Judges will present awards based on visual interest, craftsmanship and innovation: First Place $700, Second Place $400, Third Place $300, and SDA Award of Excellence.   SDA will publish a digital LookBook of all garments selected for the show after the conference.

Deadline for submissions for Fabricate is March 1, 2013.  Submission guidelines are available athttp://www.surfacedesign.org/subpage/sda-members-shows.  Digital submission is conducted through CaFÉ (www.callforentry.org). Any artist over 18 years old who wants to exhibit can join SDA and submit up to three entries.  Membership registration is available at http://www.surfacedesign.org/join.

Thanks are in order to everyone who helped with this event.  Not least our speakers who generously volunteered their time to share information from the academic to the amusing and anecdotal about their ventures into paper making from indigenous Alberta plants, more precisely plants from the Banff National Park.

 The Dade Gallery made for a perfect location and if you would like to present some of your work at our next meeting do let me know.

Our audience was mixed from all walks of the Surface Design spectrum and the enthusiasm we felt for the subject was aptly demonstrated as Romy and Eveline summed up their work.
Thanks all for supporting this event and special thanks to Greg and Darcy who, not only gave the space up for the evening but, were not concerned by us taking over many horizontal surfaces with our samples, fliers, and snacks (thanks again to the volunteers who were so keen to feed us and did so with style.
The next meeting "Swatch and Mingle"  in Calgary will take place in March when the SDA Swatch collection will be available at the meeting and afterwards.  The collection will be in Lethbridge for a meeting on February 12th, prior to the Calgary meeting and can travel afterwards.  Please get in touch with me to arrange to host the collection if you wish.

Romy and Eveline will tell us about their project Paper Landscape, how their struggles with otherwise medicinal plants sometimes found them suffering for their art... yet the results are spectacular... 
You will marvel at the varieties of paper surfaces that they produced and the efforts they went to to ensure true commitment to environmental considerations.

This is an SDA event but all are welcome.

Encaustic workshop--and swatches for SDA library

A TWO-DAY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP WITH MARIA JOSENHANS

When: Thursday and Friday, January 3 & 4, 2013   10am – 3pm

Where: The Classroom at Opus Art Supplies, 120 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver

Maximum participants: 6

Cost: $325. Materials included for the duration of the workshop:

-pre-mixed colours of beeswax and medium
-brushes
-heat guns                                                                           
-several types of irons
-hotplates                                                                            
-thermometers
-three substrates/panels per participant                         
-carving/scraping tools
-collage materials

Deposit: $75. (Refundable only if cancellation notice is given by Dec 26, 2012)

Description: This course is an introduction to the fundamental skills required for encaustic painting. This workshop is open to all levels, however a basic knowledge of colour theory is helpful. The aim of this workshop is to teach technique!

Day 1 will be comprised of demonstration (including important safety guidelines) followed by a hands-on, step-by-step tutorial. Through the replication of a finished sample painting each participant will learn and practice a variety of techniques and skills involved in the application and fusing of wax in order to achieve different effects.

Day 2 will be an open studio. Participants are free to experiment with different techniques in order to better understand how they might apply encaustics to their own work. As the class size is limited to only six participants I will be available to help each individual refine a process of application and fusing in order to achieve their desired result.
