BIG international competition and call for entries

Always good to have lots of lead time!  From Sandra Reford.

Dear Textile Artists and Quilters,

Many of you know that I have been working with the Veronese for about 7 years now in both the teaching side and the exhibiting side. Verona hosts a textile festival every two years and this coming April they will again exhibit international works and a JURIED SHOW ....which is why I am communicating with you now.

Please view the guidelines at the following address:

http://www.veronatessile.it/en_EN/concorso/concorso.html

Tell your friends and encourage them to participate. It is an international event.

I wanted to participate this year (did last time and my work was selected) but I accepted an invitation to be on the jury along with several other international artists and quilters. I think we are 5 jurors.

Consider participating! It could be an amazing opportunity to have your work exhibited in Italy at a prestigious and well attended event. There are GREAT prizes as well!

Good luck!

Sandra

Mid October

Sorry about the late "mid" posting, but the month of October started off rather like the little rhyme: "Shake and shake the ketchup bottle, first none'll come, then a lot'll"!

EXHIBITIONS:

PASSAGES
October 6 - December 24, 2012
Exhibition Reception: Saturday, October 6 from 2 - 4 pm
Alberta Craft Council Feature Gallery - 10186 - 106 Street, Edmonton AB

Passages is an exhibition that combines the projects of four artists exploring the concept of time and place using different techniques; knitting, quilting, embroidery, and ceramics. Margie Davidson (Edmonton, AB) recorded her year a stitch at a time in her project: Measuring a Year by the Minute. She knit sixty stitches per row, 24 rows per day and at the end of the year the project was an astounding 120 feet in length. Marcy Horswill's (Cumberland, BC) fibre work, Through the Other Side of the Fence, explores the adaptive relationship between wild roses and a metal fence, showing how the human-built conforms to the natural environment over time. The Isolation Project by Alana Wilson (Edson, AB) and Bridget Fairbank (Nelson, BC), records two lives spent in the isolation of the Canadian wilderness as fire tower observers. Bridget Fairbank's uses 126 small ceramic plates to represent each day that she spent alone in a fire tower during her seasonal job. By altering each dish, Bridget's personal take of daily isolation by way of routine is imposed upon each plate. Alana Wilson created small embroideries exploring ideas and pressures she feels as an isolated female in her early thirties.

NEWS:

(Some of you may know Tara through ACAD or Contextural)
Calgary Designer Introduces New Lingerie Line: Local designer Tara Niscak (Neesh-chalk) introduces her new lingerie line to the public. Salonska Lingerie will be in stores this winter and is already available online at www.salonska.com The line promises to be a great addition to the already diverse collection of designers who call this city home. This is one of the very few lingerie lines that is designed and produced in Canada.

Salonska Lingerie offers classic bias cut styles in silk, hand screen-printed with patterns from the designer’s drawings. All the pieces are made with impeccable details including bias cut styling, French-seams, bound edges and constructed with silk thread.

“I was trained in surface design (screen-printing and dyeing) at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax. Since moving to Calgary I have been studying pattern drafting and fashion construction, so it made sense to have my two skills compliment each other with this line."

Salonska's first collection is called the "Signature Collection". Eight pieces in the collection are designed to show off a woman’s curves. So if you love to show off your shoulders, the racer-back chemise with a pair of silk lounge pants would be perfect for you. If on the other hand, you have great legs but would rather cover up your arms – try the night shirt with a pair of French-shorts.

The pattern featured on the Signature Collection garments is made from ...yes you guessed it… signatures. Each piece comes in two colour ways; navy with a gold print or ivory with a navy print. “When I was designing the collection I was in the middle of changing my name after getting married last summer. I remember practicing my new signature, my new mark over and over again on scraps of paper. One day, I looked down at and saw this amazing pattern in the writing. It’s a fitting way to start off my new line,  with a new mark - a new signature.”

Salonska Lingerie's newest collection - Spring 2013 will be shown for the first time at Runway Monthly this month - Saturday, October 20th @ Exchange Social Club, downtown. Tickets are $15 (all seated tickets are sold out) and the doors open at 8pm. For more information and tickets to the runway event visit www.runwaymonthly.ca

before October starts--time sensitive information

Thought this might be of interest to those in or near Edmonton!

NEW Research Participation for Textile Designers and Fibre Artists, Edmonton
Deadline to participate: October 15

Are you interested in textile design or consider yourself a fibre artist?

Participants are needed for a research project at the University of Alberta that investigates the use of inspirational sources by seasoned designers and the design process while creating a textile pattern. The primary aim of this project is to shed some light on the design process in order to better understand the use of inspirational sources and the importance of them during that process.

This research involves two parts: interviews and observation of you while you design. The duration of observation will be negotiated in advance, but will involve one or more instances of you creating a textile pattern. Both the interview and observation will be completed with as little disruption to your work as possible. The research investigators all have backgrounds in design education and practice, therefore are fully aware of time constraints. Precision and accuracy in data collection is important to us therefore video/audio equipment will be used along with occasional photo documentation and note taking.

The projected time you would be asked to commit to is approximately ½ hour for an interview and 4 to 5 hours for the design process. The study will be carried out in a design studio at the University of Alberta or in a location that suits your needs. Participants can work alone or in groups.

If you are interested in participating in this exciting project or would like more information, please contact me by October 15, 2012: lesleys@ualberta.ca

EARTH GROWS IN VANDUSEN THIS SUMMER

July 16 to September 30, 2012 Opening reception: August 2

(Vancouver, BC) – This summer the earth will move at VanDusen Botanical Garden as we welcome five acclaimed international and local earth artists: Nils-Udo, Urs-P. Twellmann, Chris Booth, Nicole Dextras and Michael Dennis. Assembled by John Grande - one of the world’s foremost Earth Art curators – they will be creating sculptural works within the broad canvas of VanDusen’s 55 acres. Unlike other forms of sculpture and painting, which seek to create works of permanence, Earth Art uses organic materials taken from the landscape to create sculptures that inevitably decay over time. By its very nature, Earth Art is meant to be ephemeral, drawing the viewer’s attention to the beauty of the sculptural art, and the landscape in which it sits, through all its stages of existence.

The artists arrive in mid-July to start work on a wide range of pieces, with the official opening of the show in early August. The works will then remain in situ scattered throughout the Garden. Peak viewing periods will include not just when the works are completed, but the period of extemporaneous, artist-in-action construction.  More info.
