Janet Echelman Keynote Speaker at SDA San Antonio Conference

Renowned artist Janet Echelman pays homage to ancient craft traditions like lacemaking and hand weaving fishing nets on a massive scale. Her intricately woven sculptures, suspended among the towering buildings of urban landscapes, appear to hover and float.

Echelman will be keynote speaker for the Surface Design Association’s (SDA) June 6-9, 2013 In-ter-face conference in San Antonio, Texas. She will present “Taking Imagination Seriously” to hundreds of attending designers, artists, educators and makers.

Echelman is one of a distinguished line-up of featured conference speakers that will include: Warren Seeling, noted artist and visiting professor, University of the Arts in Philadelphia; Michael James, a Fellow of the American Craft Council and Ardis James Professor at University of Nebraska, Lincoln; Otto von Busch, artist and fashion designer who teaches at Parsons New School for Fashion Design; Elissa Auther, author of String, Felt, Thread: The Hierarchy of Art and Craft in American Art (Minn.,2010); and Nathalie Miebach, an artist and sculptor who has received numerous awards, including a TED Global Fellowship.

The 2013 Surface Design Association In-ter-face Conference schedule also includes Pre-Conference Workshops June 1–5, Conference Sessions June 6–9, and Post-Conference Workshops June 10–14, 2013.  In addition to the featured speakers, artist talks, student presentations, a professional panel, demonstrations, and workshops will also be conducted during the conference at Southwest School of Art, University of the Incarnate Word, and Crowne Plaza Hotel San Antonio Riverwalk.  Special events include many city-wide exhibitions, Fundraising Cocktail Party, Vendor Fair, Trunk Show, Silent Auction, Fiber Study Tour, and many networking and professional development opportunities.  For more information and registration, go to www.surfacedesign.org/2013conference
