Welcome to the April Newsletter

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you find errors in this blog entry or any others.  I appreciate your feedback.

There is a lot of information in this newsletter.  This is a busy time for calls for entries, grants and exhibition/Sales.

Thanks to everyone who has emailed information to me for this newsletter.  Please keep it coming.

I have added a page (see menu at right) for groups that are active in Alberta and might be of interest to you.  Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to CBBAG Alberta, chaired by SDA:Alberta member Susan Kristoferson.  It was a great experience and I recommend that you look into their activities, they are a wonderfully welcoming and diverse group.
Other groups throughout the province can be highlighted and included on the page of "Groups in Alberta involved in Surface Design and Fibre Arts." Simply supply me with the relevant information.

Now, here is some news from SDA

From Candace Edgerley,
President, SDA Board of Directors

Welcome new SDA Executive Director, Diane Sandlin

Dear SDA Members,

Please help me welcome our new Executive Director, Diane Sandlin of Austin, Texas. A fiber artist and member of SDA, Diane comes to us with a strong background as an executive in the insurance industry and management training in nonprofit organizations.  She has served on the board of a number of non-profit organizations and is anxious to put her skill set to work for SDA. A founding member and past president of Austin Fiber Artists, she is also a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates and the Fiber Artists of San Antonio.

Diane will join the board of directors at the spring board meeting after the SDA/SAQA Conference in Philadelphia. I hope you will take a moment to become acquainted with Diane and her work by visiting her website

The selection committee was impressed by the qualifications of the applicants for the position, and thank those who came forward to apply.

Candace Edgerley

Call for artists looking for exhibition space
Especially for the summer and fall.
Attached is a write-up .

If you are a talented artist, looking for a new venue to show your work, Rosebud may be the choice for you. Akokiniskway Gallery is currently under new management and engaged in a call for artists and portfolio submissions - we are interested in seeing your work.

Are you ready to move into the provincial market, and exhibit your work in the most significant arts village in Alberta? This may be the next natural stage for your career as a fine artist, whether you are building on the local success that you have already experienced or simply because your work does not fit into local venues and requires a more grounded audience.

Moving into the fine art world can be extremely challenging for those who do not already have a strong national presence or connections and a call for artists from many galleries may only be aimed at artists who are already well established.

Akokinskway Gallery, is a fine art gallery in Rosebud, home to the well-known professional Rosebud Dinner and Theatre. This is an ideal location for all artists to show their work and get the experience of showing their work to a provincial audience.

Akokiniskway Gallery is currently accepting submissions, and is sending out a call to artists from around the province, and at all stages in their art careers, to submit their portfolios for consideration.

Artists interested in exhibiting at the Akokiniskway Gallery should send us a package including:
- CV
- Artist statement
- No more than 10 images (digital images on a CD only)
- A related image list
- The proposal of the work you hope to show
Also include a envelope with postage for the safe return of your images.  Proposal packages can be dropped off at the Rosebud Mercantile, in Rosebud, Alberta. or mailed to:

EXHIBITIONS

OBSESSION
a group exhibition exploring the concept of obsession
March 31 - May 5, 2012
Exhibition Reception: Sat. March 31 from 2-4 pm

Calgary felt artist and curator of this exhibition Jill Nuckles has had a long interest in the artists obsession; the obsessive or compulsive approach to material, technique and repetition.   It is that compulsion that fills the work with an inexpressible depth and richness which compels the viewer to engage in an indefinable and profound way.

This group exhibition showcases six artists who identify with the theme, whether through process, narration, scale or the psychology of obsessions.  Each unique style and interpretation of the theme will allow the viewer a glimpse into the artists' psyche. The materials, scale and techniques will be appropriate to the individual maker's practice and voice. Obsessions runs March 31 - May 5 at the Alberta Craft Council Discovery Gallery, 10186 - 106 Street, Edmonton.  The artists will be in attendance for the opening reception on Saturday, March 31 from 2-4 pm.

From Linda Hawks:
The C Word Online Exhibition Catalogue

The "C" Word is a group exhibition exploring the role of craft in contemporary art, through the work of eighteen Canadian artists. Suggesting that "craft" sometimes carries negative connotations, the exhibition celebrates the making of things, drawing attention to the continued presence of craft in the work of well-known contemporary artists.

The exhibition is accompanied by a series of video interviews, in which each of the artists speaks about the role that craft plays in their practice, and a publication featuring texts by Shelley Adler, Richard Mongiat and Richard Rhodes. Both the videos and texts will also be accessible on the DMG website, as part of The "C" Word ONLINE CATALOGUE.

Call for Artists: Art in the Wild at the Edmonton Valley Zoo

The Valley Zoo Development Society is a registered charity, which fundraises for the Edmonton Valley Zoo. The Edmonton Valley Zoo is currently undergoing massive renovation and the renovations are the current focus of our fundraising efforts. If you would like more information about the Valley Zoo Development Society, please visit our website at www.buildingourzoo.com

The Event is held outdoors at the Zoo, at 13315 Buena Vista Road, Edmonton, Alberta. The Valley Zoo Development Society keeps 25% of artists' gross sales from the Event and provides a tax receipt for that 25% donation. Attached is an information sheet which provides the particulars of the Art in the Wild Event.

If you would like to participate, I will need a brief description of the type of art you do, your contact information, any dietary restrictions (as we will provide lunch), and the time you would like to come and set up. The Zoo opens at 9:30 am and you may set up and start selling at that time if you would like. We do require that you be in attendance from 12 to 4 pm.
